Historic Barrio Amon will be alive with cultural activities this Wednesday evening for the first artwalk of 2011. Over 20 galleries and musuems open their doors free to the public and attendees can travel between venues on foot (U4), bicycle (ChepeCletas) or shuttle (GAM) to see the lastest national and international pieces on display.

The newest cultural center in the barrio, Downtown Yoga (a Barrio Bird partner) will also open its doors to the public for a chance to try for free the newest exercise craze, Hooping from 4:30 - 5:15 & 6:30 - 9:00. You can Help Save Historic Home in San Jose & Eat French Food Too!

French Ambassador will open the doors of his home in an effort to save The French Alliance building.

The French Alliance is a historic Costa Rican landmark located in Barrio Amon, San Jose. Built in 1895 this home represents a traditional victorian style home of the time period, specifically featuring a large front porch, long central corridor with interior courtyard, and wood floors and walls. It is this wood that has recently become victim to termites.

The Alliance repaired wood which had actually been placed in the 90s over the Christmas break upon the discovery of these unavoidable creatures. While the majority of damage happened to this later-installed, less durable wood, minor damage has happened to original pieces and therefore the Alliance is hosting a Franco dinner to raise funds to properly treat and replace the affected wood.

So on Thursday, February 10 at 7:30 for the low price of $50 you can enjoy a french meal in the home of the French Ambassador and a performance from ARSYSS a french pop vocal group. Mystery Building to Reopen in Barrio Amon

Across from Barrio Bird headquarters sits an architectural mystery for many who pass by. Onlookers everyday stop to peer at the strange outside, wondering what possibly could have existed on the inside. We ourselves have tried to figure out the story behind the building and today we have answer-- and more, we know there is a new future in store.

This home is about 50 years old, and belonged to a Costa Rican woman who studied but did not complete architecture studies in France. She returned and built this ecclectic home. It's last public foray was as a design exhibition. Multiple artists created different environments in each room, making this already labyrinth even more crazy as you wonder from room to room. After sitting empty for years, some of the design elements are still surreally intact.

The building has just been bought by Belgiums and future plans are undisclosed but a hotel is a likely option with restaurant possibilities. This building's renovation will absolutely be an additional cultural anchor in the ever revitalizing Barrio Amon, San Jose.

2011 Festival Announcements Made as Holiday Festivities Close 2010

Without a doubt, San Jose is the place to be in Costa Rica during the summer if you want to get a taste of culture and enjoy festivals. This December, while chillier than most is still full of holiday festivities to enjoy as we launch into full summer in January. A list of remaining December activities is below, as well as dates to mark on your calendars for the rest of summer.

Lights of Christmas Fair: Come and browse artisan crafts, art and jewelry as you finish holiday gift shopping. Next to the National Theater, Dec. 14 - 19. One of our favorites AHM will be there!

Holiday Jazz Vocals, Maria Pretiz: Snuggle up with your loved ones this Fri. at one of San Jose's newest restaurants Roma Caffe. Every Fri. they offer live music, and this week is a special guest and Costa Rican composer and vocalist Maria Pretiz. No cover, 8 p.m.

Our Land Festival: As an effort to clean up Costa Rica, this festival will be a marathon recycling event and drop center for paper, plastics, glass, batteries, cardboard and cans. After you lighten your load of recyclables get down to live music all day long. La Sabana Park, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Free.

National Bands Holiday Concerts: The bands of the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) will give 4 concerts this weekend at the Plaza de Democracia next to the National Museum. Celebrating 165 years of the forming of the national bands, over 200 musicians will perform Christmas pieces, Costa Rican pieces and a variety of other classics. Additionally the Christmas lottery winner will be announced during the last concert on Sunday. Starts at 4 on Sat. 3 on Sunday.

Speed Dating: Still looking for a loved one to snuggle with over the holidays? Come to Caracas Arepia Wed. Dec. 22 to meet other professional singles. (Hate that I have to say this, but this is not a prostitution meet up, only those not wanting to buy love please). Special request to single ladies: DON'T BE SHY, come out!

Christmas Tope: If you haven't yet seen a tope, a horse dancing festival, The day after Christmas is a good day to do so. Starts around 12 on the 26th, Paseo Colon. Warning, this is really an excuse to get drunk in the street and ride a horse, not necessarily a good combination. Be safe!

Bullfights: I don't even want to spoil this for anyone. Let's just say Costa Rica has it's own special version of bullfights where humans are injured, not bulls. These fights are all day starting Christmas Day for about 10 days at Ampo Ferial en Zapote.

CENAC Summer Festival: The Cenac summer festival series is free and will feature concerts and art shows for all ages to give exposure to Costa Rican artists the weekends of March 4,5, and 6 and 11, 12, 13.

TransitArte: This festival will partner with CENAC the weekend of March 11, 12, and 13 to bring art to the parks and public spaces of the North East parts of downtown San Jose in an effort to bring people back into the city center.

International Design Festival: Artists from around the world representing graphic, interior, fashion and art design will gather to host workshops, fairs, exhibitions and parties to display and discuss the lastest in all things design. Save the dates for March 10, 11 and 12. More info at FID.

Summer is almost here with the ending of the rain, and a full calendar of events this week is a great reason to get outside! The weather has also been great for a San Jose, Costa Rica walking tour for travelers and residents alike!

Art City Tour

The art city tour is back this Wed. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, a number of galleries and museums downtown open their doors for free to the public. Buses are available for safe transit in between, as well as new tours on bike with ChepeCletas and walking tours with U4. The French Alliance will host a mini-fashion show, Shadows of the Moon, featuring a collection by designer and Belgium french teacher, Magaly Timmerman. 6 - 8 p.m.

Why is Carmen Lyra on the New 20,000 Colones Note

Visit the auditorium this Thurs. at the Central Bank Museum for a talk about beloved Costa Rican children's author, Carmen Lyra. 90 years after the publication of the famous Cuentos de mi Tía Panchita you can hear about the significance of these works in Central America's children's literacy. In Spanish, 6 p.m.

Live Hammock Making from 6-pack Plastics Rings

This Sat. bring your 6-pack plastics the organic farmer's market in Barrio Aranjuez downtown. There will be two hammocks on display and the artist, Francesco Bracco, will be showing us how to make them. What's New to See in San Jose After the Rain

While the rainy season reached it's height, workers still pushed forward on rehabbing some more downtown architectural delights. In addition another public mural was redone after having been marred with graffitti and political posters. Enjoy the photos.

Felo Garcia: Top Costa Rican Artist on Display, One of My Favorites

This Wednesday is the opening of an exhibit of works by one of Costa Rica's most famous artists, Felo Garcia. Celebrating his career, this special showing at the Bank Museum's temporary exhibit hall, showcases recent works including, 'The Corners of Here and There' and 'Files', Oct. 20 - Nov. 28.

Garcia's story is one of adventure. With some background in architecture, he played soccer in Cuba where he met Manuel de la Cruz and began to take an interest in painting. Continuing onward to play soccer in Columbia he became fascinated with las favelas and began painting with more frequency. He continued formal training in painting in London and held a career as Director of Arquitecture at the University of Costa Rica.

For me, Garcia captures some of the more impoverished scenes we often see in Latin America, pulling out the quaint, quiet beauty of these urban architectural landscapes. This exhibit will be a must see if you are in town, showing many of these scenes, as well as more recent abstract work in black and white with lines.

New Lights Shine on the Cultural Plaza

In the heart of downtown San Jose, Costa Rica, construction that began about 4 months ago is completed at the Cultural Plaza (Plaza de la Cultura) next to the National Theater. As we reported earlier, 34 lamp posts were removed and 11 new posts installed. These posts are taller producing more light while using less energy. These new lights bring better safety to the area for those passing through at night.

Additional construction happening in the area includes new benches and sitting areas, as well as handicap access to the Gold and Money museums below the National Theater. Also, the National Theater is getting a new copper roof which should be completed sometime in December. These changes are all positive and continue to move San Jose forward as a safer, and modern cultural center.

French Alliance Offers Collection of Activities for Oct.

The French Alliance is a special gem in Barrio Amon, San Jose, and always open to tourists. Set in an old victorian style home, the alliance strives to connect Costa Ricans and visitors to the best of french culture, and also inclusion of work by Costa Rican artists. Here's a sample of what is going on this month:

Compañía: Eduardo Mata
A series of 15 oil paintings, this collection takes a look at people. From the artist, "Who are they to me? Who are they to themselves? Who am I to them? and Who am I to myself?" This is on display until Wed. Oct. 13.

Das weisse Band: La Cinta Blanca
A French/German film telling the story of strange events for a group of children in the months prior to WWI. Showing is free at the French Alliance on Fri. Oct. 8th at 6:00 p.m. Will be shown in French with Spanish subtitles.

European Film Festival
Running the 25th of Oct. to the 31st, 6 European films will be shown at Cine Magaly. If you have not been inside this theater, it's a must, as it's beautiful with some art deco architectural influence. Entrance is free, times are not yet available.

Pretty Things to See & Hear, Despite the Rain in San Jose, Costa Rica

A guitar festival and art openings will entertain this week. Good reasons for expats and tourists to get out despite the rain.

International Guitar Festival
The 17th International Guitar Festival will bring 23 guitarists from 8 different countries and Costa Rica to the stage at the National Theater, Sept. 29 - Oct. 3. Grammy winning guitarist, Andrew York, will perform Saturday night. All detailed guitar festival info is on the website.

Art Opening at Museum of Contemporary Art & Design
Mudar el Piel: Karla Solano will open Thursday night at 7 p.m. The exhibition will take a look at the body, as a whole and individual parts. While this isn't a unique topic for artistic review, I hope we'll see some thought provoking pieces and not an overuse of nudity for shocking effect.

Juegos Textuales: Miguel Imbach also opens Thurday night just down the street from MADC at 7:30. A video and then text will be read. This will all be in Spanish, but a good chance to see what some local artists are up to in San Jose.

Gay Rights vs. Gay Acceptance in Costa Rica & Why Social Media Matters

Last week presented a flurry of international news about what probably seemed like a minor incident to a local business owner in San Pedro.

Published last Wed. by Natalia Solorzano on her facebook page, her personal account of 'homophobia' in the restaurant La Buca swept virally across the Costa Rican social media network. Within hours the FaceBook Group, People Against La Buca was created and had hundreds of fans, and to date has over 1,200. Within a day, international news wires had picked up the story bringing Costa Rica's cultural tolerance of gays or lack thereof into global spotlight. Such articles here, Vanguardia, Carapicha (Costa Rica blog),and Generracion.com.

What was a supposed hug and kiss between two males, led the manager to ask a waiter to inform the couple this public display of affection was inappropriate. The couple's entire group decided to leave and then, bothered, asked to speak to the manager. The manager refused to come talk directly to the couple, dismissing them saying he was in a meeting, at 9 at night. The group, frequent visitors to La Buca, and frequent witnesses to the same unreprimanded heterosexual behavior at the location, felt it was an obvious display of discrimination.

Anti La Bucca supporters, also formed a campaign against Caffe Roma, believing they had the same owner. Due to the instantaneous rebellion against La Bucca, Caffe Roma was prompted to respond online with this response.

Initial response from La Buca was rather nonexistent, I think they were incorrectly overconfident in this not being a big deal. But after two days they met with the leader of the Movement for Diversity, trying to establish that this was not an act of discrimination, but a an act of policy of which all patrons are held to.

Leader, Abelardo Araya seemed satisfied with La Buca's response, but these events bring about a few items of note; the new power of social media that has arrived in Costa Rica and the need for businesses here to be active and aware of what is being said about them amongst online communities, the notion of Costa Ricans accepting gays vs. actually accepting them, and how that battle will play out as Costa Rica moves forward with legally accepting gays by granting civil union rights to gays.

The overall online response to the situation speaks to the strength of voice Costa Ricans can give to the battles for the cultural and legal acceptance of gays in Costa Rica.

Glam, Glitz and Community This Friday

There’s nothing like the glitter and excitement of opening night and it’s going to be even more colorful this Friday at the opening of The Birdcage with a fabulous gala and silent auction following on at the nearby Hotel Ambassador (Paseo Colon, Calle 26/28).

This wonderful extravaganza has been adapted for the LTG stage by Andrew Gardener, and is a charming blend of The Birdcage and La Cage Aux Folles. Musical numbers have been added iterspersed with the story to give a well rounded tale of two Jewish, middle aged gay men who run a night club in South Beach, Florida. Their son, the product of one night of romance with a straight woman, wants to marry the daughter of a moral and upstanding Senator. Fun and laughs ensue when the couple must play it straight to impress the daughter's parents.

The Gala after the first performance of the Little Theatre Group comedy, The Birdcage, will benefit Open Arms Costa Rica, a non-profit charity serving the children of Costa Rica. Tickets are ¢8,000 which includes beer, wine and goodies.

Rehearsals of this show were fantastic, and the sets and costumes are stunning, can't wait to see the final product!

Japan meets Costa Rica in a Flurry of Art

Music, dancing and art were wound together, and topped with latin and asian eye candy last night at the opening of 'Zentica'.The Costa Rica Musuem of Art brought the two cultures of Japon and Costa Rica into the same space at Casa del Cuño, at the newly remodeled, La Aduana.

40 pieces, 20 Costa Rican and 20 Japanese, include sculptures, jewelry, paintings, videos and more. It is very interesting to see the differences between the artwork of the two nations. Overall, the Costa Rican pieces seem to work more with pastel colors, blending images, and taboo topics. The Japanese pieces were simple, yet bold, using solid colors, and almost alway integrating or dipicting natural elements such as birds, flowers, wood, etc. It's all worth checking out yourself.

Guests were entertained by a number of live art performances. Artist Kazunobu Yanagi, painted while a band played an electric rock/meditation type of chant. Later, 4 women performed live dance as they simultaneously did larger than life oragami folding.

Costa Rican artist, Fabio Herrara shows us his 'office'. I think this is a great dipiction of San Jose.

Inside a Secret Mansion in Downtown San Jose

It's impossible to walk by this architectural marvel, crumbling right before your eyes, and not want to know it's story, to rescue it, to see it live again. This beautiful and mysterious building is Casa Jiménez. Built in 1905 it was designed by it's original owner, lawyer and diplomat Manuel Francisco Jiménez Ortiz. It is one of the only remaining Art Nouveau style buildings in the city, and it's a feature on our walking tours.

The building is currently under disputed ownership, or rather it's stuck in court. It is on the Ministry of Culture's protected Heritage list and therefore its architectural integrity must be maintained in remodeling, but at this point, it simply needs to be saved.

Barrio Bird did have the chance to sneak inside and snap some photos. Here is a look inside the torn apart building, as well as a photo of it's original glory.

The launch of a new designers' association in Costa Rica is a very important step towards what I am calling a cultural revitalization that is going to explode exponentially over the next two years in San Jose.

The Asociación de Diseñadores de Costa Rica, supported by the Ministry of Culture, was inaugurated last night at La Aduana, using the new tech and art facility on the east side of the building.

The group's intent is to support designers of all kinds from Costa Rica. About 95% of designers are small business operations, and this will provide a platform for workshops, peer-to-peer information sharing, and inspiration. I hope this group will also become a force to launch costa rican designers onto the global stage.

President Laura Chinchilla, gave her 100 day - and rest of term address/goals presentation this past Mon. night in the National Auditorium at the Children's Museum. Delivered to a packed audience, she reviewed what the goals and priorities are for Costa Rica at large. I'm going to do my best to interpret and predict what that might mean for downtown San Jose.

95% Renewable Energy Use & One of First CO2 Neutral:
Regarding San Jose, one could only hope this relates to cars and use of gasoline. I don't have much background on current fuel usage, but it would be great to see more hybrid/electric cars on the road and maybe a few charging stations. It is stated in her goals to better structure and organize the transportation routes for the greater metropolitan area (GAM). Anyone with more specifics on this topic feel free to write, barriobird@gmail.com. Additionally, car exhaust testing and regulations would greatly improve the atmosphere in the city if someone didn't have to fight the many fumes from cars, buses and trucks.

Safety
In San Jose it seemed the day Chinchilla took office, more officers took foot in the downtown area. Having increased the force just 2 weeks ago with the graduation of 700 officers it seems she can reach the term goal to increase the national police force by 4,000. Unfortunately, the minister of security is asking for thousands more to combat crime in Costa Rica. I have been impressed however, with the forward motion of safety camera installations and increase in numbers of officers walking around downtown. How much it all will help no one knows. Recent incidents such as these two cops under investigation for letting a trannie sell drugs, is a reminder that aspirations and real world don't always connect in the city. Overall, I still say San Jose is a very safe place for non-idiots.

Other
Many of the President's remaining goals speak to education, and connectivity via telecommunications infrastructure and road/rail/air. These goals, in addition to helping unemployment and poverty, will probably be acheived by work outside the GAM. One goal is to have 85% of schools connected to the internet. Overall, the improvements to San Jose will continue to come probably more from a municipal level. Let's get ready for a mayoral election!

Hope & Metamorphosis in San Jose, Costa Rica

Two art installations currently on display in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica explore the ideas of hope, it's virtues and shortfalls, and showcase an artist's journey in textiles. Both invoke thoughtful conversations and inspiration to explore our own surroundings as art.

+/- Esperanza (+/- Hope) is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MADC). 28 artists from Central America and the Carribean explore ideas of Hope. Surprisingly, some of these pieces looked at hope from an anxious or deathly perspective. I think these add a level of depth to the entire exhibition.

My personal favorite is the first photo below. Outside of the Jade Museum, It quotes a very famous Costa Rican writer and poet, Isaac Felipe Azofeifa Bolaño, of which translates to, "Yes, child. The stars have parted, but it never becomes more dark than just before dawn." I find the quote especially appropriate with the image because I've watched this moment many times now with the homeless scattered throughout San Jose. And as an outsider, it's a very dark moment where all you can feel is hope that everyone with less, could have more.

The National Museum is currently housing a garden of variety and beauty in it's once eery prison chambers. Metamorphosis. A New Cycle is an exhibit of textile art that transforms many fabrics, paper plates, coke tabs and more into displays that take the imagination for a spin. Costa Rican artist, Sylvia Piza-Tandlich, has worked with her community based artists to create these individual pieces that are strung together with threads and links to showcase some extremely impressive handmade pieces. The last photo shows the latrine that has parts of the ceiling from the old Municipal Theater.

Music to Close the Afternoon - Teatro Nacional.
The National Theater offers Thurs. early evening performances for the low price of 1,000 colones. The Orchestra of the University of Costa Rica will perform from 5 - 6 p.m., and will be presenting the most notable and admired work by Italian composer, Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741): The four seasons. Guest violinist, Eva Liebhaber will join the group in this important Baroque period performance.

Art Opening, MADC, - La Esperanza (Hope)
The Museum of Contemporary Art will open its new exhibition this Thurs. at 6:00 p.m. Works of 28 artists from Central America and the Carribean will be on display exploring this very basic human emotion: Hope. We'll see an analysis of this concept, it's virtues, weaknesses and contradictions, stepping away from our everyday unilateral view of this simple, yet extremely complex experience.

All Star Concert of Costa Rican Musicians - Jazz Cafe, Escazu
Again, I don't usually cover Escazu, but the occasional event warrants coverage due to its significance to overall culture in Costa Rica.

Married musicians, Juan Carlos Ureña y Jeana Paul-Ureña will be performing songs from their new album, Space of Light. These 12 songs take a musical journey through sound, beyond political or geographical borders, are backed by some of Costa Rica's best musicians, and produced by vocalist, pianist and composer María Pretiz.

The couple will be joined by many of the artists recorded on this CD including 2 time grammy winner Wálter Flores and standout guitarist Bernal Villegas. To celebrate 60 years since the creation of the Central Bank, the Gold Museum now has bracelets, necklaces and earrings replicating the works of pre-columbian Costa Ricans. These images are certified with the museum and there is a 30% discount through August 15th. Could It Be? Real Labeled Addresses in San Jose, Costa Rica??

The city of San Jose, Costa Rica has just announced important news that over time will greatly help tourists and expats alike--the use of numerically labeled street addresses. While there are the occasional references to street numbers and street signs visible, the historic manner of giving addresses and directions is based off of markers.

Such as, '100 meters west and 200 meters south of Edificio de los Correos'. This is difficult for those unfamiliar with the markers, especially if the marker doesn't exist anymore except in the memory of Ticos. These new signs will begin to be installed in December of this year, and homes and businesses will be assigned a number. This is to happen throughout all of the city districts. The project is being funded by Banco Nacional and Bank of Costa Rica.

I have personally come to love the current method of addresses/directions, but understand the significance to tourism especially of a numbered system. Until then however, and especially until Ticos begin to use and acknowledge the numbered system, make sure you ask several Ticos for directions, because another cultural nuiance -- their desire to not only reference a marker, but to give you directions even if they don't actually know. It's all about being nice, wanting to save face and not say they don't know, which could send you in the opposite direction. So, do your direction gathering by consensus. I suggest a best of 3. Contemporary National Music in Costa Rica

Are you visiting and want to check out some of the most notorious bands, or living here and want to be more connected to music produced nationally? Radio Malpais is a great place to start a search. Broadcasting online at http://www.radiomalpais.com/ there are constant interviews with artists and what's played is 100% associated with Costa Rica.

Last Sat. was the 3rd anniversary party of the station, and a great concert was held at Latino Rock Cafe....a great venue to start seeing Costa Rican bands. The following are the artists that played, I liked them all and would see any of them again. The night ended with some 'Carnival' dancers & drummers. Fiesta! Photos also included.

Secrets, Glamour and History open in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica

Dining and drinking options are continuing to open with rapid pace in the city center of San Jose, Costa Rica. From Rome to underground tunnels, these featured options offer stories and beautiful surroundings in addition to food and drinks.

The Speakeasy Bar has been open a little over a month inside the also newly opened Secret Mansion. This bar is entered in a speakeasy fashion through a side entry and spreads over a portion of the bottom floor of a renovated mansion in Barrio Amon. This entire house was in the family of past president Oscar Arias until about 5 years ago when the new owners began renovations.

There are a few haunted ghost stories and underground tunnels at this 130 year old site. I highly recommend stopping in for a happy hour to imbibe in some wonderful urban history. In fact, we'll be adding this bar to our happy hour bar tour, which you can take for only $10! Unfortunately, access to the rest of the mansion is reserved for private guests of this high-end hotel.

Roma Caffe is downtown's newest posh restaurant situated conveniently off the main road headed into San Pedro, just east of the National Museum. The restaurant's style is very sleek and incorporates original exposed brick walls with the warmth and delight of it's Italian menu. The chef is Italian and it was apparant upon my first visit. I enjoyed a prosciutto and provelone panini that was presented on bread made in house! The menu is large ranging from antipastos to sandwhiches to pastas and desert. This will quickly become a spot to meet with friends and enjoy dinner and early drinks before a night off to the theater or clubs/bars downtown. Cash only at the moment, free wi-fi, open from 7 a.m. to midnight, and till 2 Fri. and Sat. Closed Sundays.

Cafe Teatro Melico Salazar has opened on the bottom floor of this historic downtown theater. The building, constructed in the late 1920s and renovated in the 80's offers another special opportunity to step back in time and enjoy a more colonial San Jose. The cafe incorporates the natural colors and woods of the rest of the theater and uses the ceiling to display historic photos of San Jose, further setting the stage for a moment back in time. There is a small menu available as well as coffee. I highly recommend this as an afternoon getaway from our afternoon rain showers. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or later if there is a show.

The English speaking, Little Theatre Group of Costa Rica is presenting a one-weekend only show.

LTG asked theater members to write original monologues on the topic of love. The response was extremely varied, and this opportunity is one of a lifetime to see authors performing their own pieces on such a personal topic.The show features everything from a scary, yet impressionable great mastif, to Russian lessons, to the absurdities in life.

New Italian and Lights, Sound Romantic? Downtown San Jose, Costa Rica

We are very happy to report on new happenings downtown because most of the time they are adding cultural options or improving ambiance. This post has a little of both to cheer about in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica, making this an ever increasing destination for toursists and expats.

Safer, Nicer Lighting at Plaza de la Cultura: The plaza that sits on top of the Bank Museums and surrounds Teatro Nacional will be receiving a bit of a facelift and a new lighting system beginning next week. The plaza currently has 34 light posts and will be replaced with 11 that give out more light using less energy. A study will be done to determine the optimum placement of these lights and then they will be installed.

In addition the plaza will be reworked to provide better seating for people to meet and have a true 'plaza experience'. A handicap ramp will also be installed for easier musuem access below. These changes should be completed some time in September.

Add these changes to the improvements that have already happened on Paseo de los Damas, and the Urban Plan for Barrio Escalante, and in another year we are sure to have a pleasant and safe walking experience from as far as Mall San Pedro down to the heart of the city at Plaza de la Cultura.

New Italian Restaurant: At least when one restaurant closes another usually opens quickly in its place. Last month I wrote about the closure of Argentine restaurant, Pachamama. Now in its place, on the first floor of Edificio Morazan is Little Italy. This restaurant will be 'softly' open starting next Monday, and continuing to fine-tune the ambiance throughout the week. Hours 11-4 to begin.

Seeing as how there cannot be enough good pizza in downtown, this place is very welcome and a first round of tasting says the menu items will only get better. Featuring about 10 different pizzas including mexican and exotica (fresh fruits like pineapple, green apple or strawberry), the menu also includes calzones, spaghetti, a pizza burger and salads among its variety of options. Prices are reasonable starting with a small pizza for 2,000 colones to a large for 7,500.

I still also recommend OK Ristorante Italiano as well for good pizza. Right now I'd say the defining difference is Little Italy is probably serving up heavier meat options while OK is a lighter, more Italian style.

Three fun things happening tonight in the downtown area for tourists and expats alike to enjoy.

Jazz & Orchestra: USA meets Costa Rica in a fun jazz symphonic performance at Teatro Nacional. 8 p.m. 1,500 - 10,000 colones. The National Symphonic Orchestra will be joined by seven piece group, Combo Nuvo from the USA. This will be a nice chance to see the Orchestra move outside it's classical shows into the exotic world of jazz. 10 pieces will be performed.

Fundraising Concert for 'A Roof for My Country' Bands include Cortez Amarillo, Los Acetatos, Diesel, Raging Bull Leather Jacket, Moldo y Eclipse. The concert is 4,000 colones and will be at El Observatorio at 8 p.m.. 80% of the door will be given to the non-profit, committed to building homes for the poor throughout Costa Rica.

Costa Rican Film, A Ojos Cerrados, by Hernán Jiménez opens in theaters tonight. This is in Spanish, but will be a great opportunity to see a film some are saying is the best made by a Costa Rican. Showing at 6:10, 7:45, and 9:10 at Mall San Pedro.

Paseo de los/las Damas-Downtown Keeps Getting Better

I've been championing the revitalization efforts of San Jose for the past year, happy to show people its hidden beauty. Here is a summary of this past Sunday's article in PROA, highlighting all that has been completed on Paseo de los Damas (Parque Morazan to La Aduana), and the few things we'll see over the next two years.

Sidewalks, public art installments, restoration of the old police station, Edificio Metallico, Parque Morazan & La Aduana.

To come:
Construction of new legislative assembly building and president's house. Also a cafe and visitor's center located inside old train cars outside of the Atlantic Train Station. There is also a conversation about a pedestrian bridge that would connect the Paseo at La Aduana, providing easy access to Barrio Escalante. So in a few years with more development of the Barrio Escalante Urban plan it would be a beautiful and easy walk from Mall San Pedro all the way to the National Theater.

The aim of all of these projects is to return this sector of downtown to it's prior status of elegance and political power center for all josefinos (San Jose-ans) to enjoy.

New Food, Goodbye Food - San Jose, Costa Rica

Downtown welcomes the only Arepas cafe, Caracas. The arepa is popular in Venezuela and Columbia. To me, it's a mix between a stuffed pita and McDonald's breakfast sandwhich. It's really like neither. The arepa is like a corn tortilla but much thicker, almost like a biscuit (american biscuit) and then filled with whatever you like. I've had a breakfast arepa, carne mechada (shredded beef in tomato sauce) and reina pepiada (chicken salad with avocado). They were all spectacular!

The ambiance is friendly, energetic and fun. I love the orange. The cafe also offers a variety of smoothies and salads, and they also have a venezuelan casado. They accept credit cards and have wi-fi. Most importantly they have a large pull down screen for world cup viewing! M-F 7 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sun. 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Sadly, several food joints downtown of closed down for various reasons. Cafe Valandra, Pachamama, Maple Leaf Cafe, and Cafe Urbano have all closed. Cafe Urbano will be opening in a new location soon. Equipment at Maple Leaf and Pachamama is for sale.

Downtown Architecture & Urban Planning Update

There are several new and exciting developments to report on downtown.

Outside Complete: I wrote a few months ago about the building that is across the from La Marinita. The outside is basically complete. This building now really stands out as a must see in downtown. Plans for the building aren't firm, but a possible bar/restaurant might open on the bottom with some residential space on top.

New Paint: The Girl's School on Ave. 4 has been undergoing much renovation and it appears a new paint job will soon be under way. This particular corner boasts one of my favorite views in the city on a clear day. You can look down at Iglesia de la Soledad and get beautiful mountain views in all directions.

Ugly Fence: This historic home sits on Ave. 7. Almost 100 years old, it is of Victorian influence and was built by a Spanish merchant. It's architecture represents much of what was found throughout Barrio Amon in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, a taller gate has been added with razor wire on top for security, really detracting from the original beauty of the home. We'll see what else develops at this home.

325 New Trees!! I also previously wrote about Barrio Escalante's new Urban Plan. A first step towards completing this plan was the planting of 325 new trees throughout the neighborhood. A variety of species were added to serve as homes to birds and butterflies, provide a variety of color with different blossoms, and to hopefully create the first carbon neutral neighborhood in the country. Is there a carbon neutral neighborhood in your country?? The species of trees planted include; palo verde, árbol de fuego, cortés negro, choreque, roble sabana, guachipelín, dama, manzanita y palmera real. I can't wait to take a new stroll through this neighborhood. Maybe we'll do a plant/architecture tour!

International Environment Day Weekend Activities - San Jose, Costa Rica

Saturday, June 5 is International Environment Day and there will be several opportunities to partake in San Jose.

The Central Bank Museums will have a few shows of theater and dance related to environmental themes beginning at 10:30 and lasting until 1 p.m. on Saturday. They will also be collecting paper, plastic, cardboard, glass and clean aluminum for recycling.

A new organic farmer's market in Barrio Aranjuez would also be a great way to celebrate the day. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can find fruits, vegetables, organic products and have breakfast, lunch and enjoy artisan crafts. Located 400 meters west of Colegio Mexico.

The fun continues on Sunday with concerts and a fair on Paseo Colon from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Mascarades, talks, kids tables, and theater will take place. In addition the following bands will perform; Henna, Shel y R9 Band, Esteban Calderon, PatinoQuintana.

If you are downtown on Saturday I recommend trying a special French menu offered only this weekend in downtown's only restaurant in a castle, Cafe Moro. 9,800 colones included taxes.

Additionally, it was just announced Costa Rica will be hosting it's first international environmental film festival CRiterio Ambiental. The festival will strive not only to showcase films but to provide opportunities for discussion and debates. Fiction and nonfiction films will be considered including documentaries or animation. The festival's founder, Gustavo Solís will be collecting submissions until midnight on July 15th. The festival will take place in La Fortuna Sept. 25 - Oct. 1.

The French Alliance has a new exhibit open titled, 'The Beautiful Summer'. Costa Rican artist, José Solórzano. Comprised of 12 pieces the artists created the works between 09-10 concentrating on the idea of recent yet no longer viewed scenery, dissolving into memory. On display until June 10.

The National Theater continues to bring us 'mini-concerts' on Thurs. afternoons. This is a great, affordable way to see a show in the theater. This week Costa Rican pianist, Juan Pablo Andrado will perform for an hour starting at 5 p.m. He'll be presenting a collection of works by Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin (1810-1849), celebrating 200 years after his birth. Variedades Theater will open a month-long run of 'The forests of NYX' a play about 10 greek female goddesses come to save modern day problems. This is the second time this show is being performed under the same director, Luis Carlos Vazquez. Opens Fri. June 3 and will be in Spanish at 8:00 p.m. Pricing was not available.

Legendary guitarist, Richie Kotzen, who has played with Poison and Mr. Big, will be performing at Latino Rock Cafe, Fri. June 4. Sounds like nothing other than a great chance to see a great electric guitarist jam at a great cafe. ROCK ON!! 15,000 colones, 9 p.m.

One of San Jose's crazier galleries, Jacob Karpio is hosting what I anticipate to be a wild Saturday night. Hosting an opening for MTV nominated, Uragyuan artist, DANI UMPI. This artist is mostly known for his music but will also be showing his recent works in visual media. Titled, 'Everything Included', music, art, scenesters, and wine can only lead to 'everything' happening! free, starts at 8:30.

Las Robertas, Bar La Mochila: This garage punk band is comprised of four Costa Rican girls who usually rock out, but will be doing a special acoustic set this Thurs. June 3. The band formed early last year and is becoming a hit here in hipster circles. Show starts at 9:00 p.m. and is gratis (free). The bar is located inside the Costa Rica Backpacker's Hostel, accessed from the back.

The Flying Pigs, Nancy Buchan, Key Largo: My favorite Costa Rican expat fiddle player will be taking the stage with blues band, The Flying Pigs this Sat. at 9 at Key Largo. Unfortunately, the event is at Key Largo. Not exactly the place to feel empowered about being a woman (aka prostitute pick-up joint). There is also supposedly a live web-cam for the creepoids that want to sit at home and watch, so maybe wearing a mask is a good way to best enjoy this show. Also gratis (free).

Leslie Smith, Jazz Cafe Escazu: While this venue is outside of downtown, her appearance is significant enough to include in my women in music segment. This renowned jazz vocalist will be playing out at the beach Fri. and Sat. but will join us in the city for an intimate Sunday evening performance beginning at 7 p.m. Smith was named a cultural ambassador of New Orleans music in 2002, being incorporated into an airport mural. Cost is 10,000 colones.

There are a number of ways visitors and expats alike can give back while they are in Costa Rica. Below are some of the organizations I trust and support.

The Women's Club of Costa Rica: This organization just celebrated its 70th anniversary. Their motto is 'Friendship through Service', and they mean it. The WCCR focuses on raising funds to build school libraries around Costa Rica, and offer scholarships for highschool students to cover expenses in college. Not only does this group play a large role in service, it is also comprised of women from all over the world who have been leaders in their industries, or who are now actively growing new businesses. A great place to find female mentorship and partnership.

Gracias Costa Rica: Gracias Costa Rica is in the middle of growing and expanding services, but it is a great resource if you are unsure of where to take old clothing, leave behind travel goods, or specify donations to a non-profit without having to go through the donation process in Spanish. Their primary goal is to get your donations where you want them. Check in as this organization grows. Here is what is immediately needed.

Blood Donations: As in many other countries, there is usually a shortage of blood donations available in Costa Rica. Those that are eligible to donate, or thinking of giving for the first time have many options in the metro area. The main blood bank of La Caja is located in Zapote at the southern corner of the church. Donors can also go to any hospital to make a donation, and in outer lying areas one can usually walk into a red cross without an appointment to give.

Contemporary Art Museum Opening - San Jose, Costa Rica: Tuesday gives us a new art opening at MADC, Esteban Piedra León. Estudios (2002-2010). Overall exhibition is an assembly of the artist's common themes throughout his work; fundamental elements for agitation and questioning. Room I: Architecture for unuseful, non fertile bodies Room II: Defined, permanent & concave Room III: No, no one else either. This museum is located in the beautiful Old FANAL (old guaro distillary) and the site alone is worth a visit. Opening is at 7 p.m. Runs thru July 13.

Mozart at the French Alliance - Barrio Amon, Costa Rica: Wed. will offer a free recital by members of the University of Costa Rica's Orchestra. Performing what some call Mozart's greatest work and written for his wedding, la Gran Serenata para Vientos K361. Begins at 7:30. I recommend an early arrival as this space is an old house and it will probably overfill. Parking is a half block east of the alliance.

Afternoon Guitar Quartet at National Theater: The quartet will be performing a set of songs written in 1886, Spain on Thurs. This is an affordable opportunity to see the theater at only 1,000 colones. 5 - 6 p.m. Admission might be more for non-residents.

Opening Glenngarry Glenn Ross - Sala Garbo: The Little Theatre Group of Costa Rica opens this Fri. with the real estate scandal show, Glenngarry Glenn Ross. A topic many can relate to in Costa Rica, this one promises to throw a few curve balls. Starts at 7:30, adult language, 4,500 colones. Reserve online.

Review: Des Pacio Art Opening & Las Robertas

Des Pacio - Virginia Perez-Ratton: There are a few requirements for a good art opening. a) lots to drink b) fancy/funky artsy folk to admire or laugh at and c) great art. Last night's opening at Des Pacio had plenty of A and B, but I'm struggling with C.

Art isn't always 'pretty pictures' as we saw last night. Sometimes you have to really think and work through the artist's statement. Unfortunately, I'd been doped up on cold meds for 2 days so I didn't feel like thinking. So, if you want pretty pictures I really don't recommend this exhibit. If you want to explore 'a dining table' and the stories of life that surround it, go check it out. With all due respect, Ms. Perez was honored with Costa Rica's highest cultural award, El MAGON last year, so I'm sure there's a message hiding worth taking away.

Las Robertas at El Steinvorth: While I was really excited to see this band and really love the bar, I have to say this is not a good venue for live shows (it's the 3rd I've seen). The sound really travels and it's hard to hear anything over the drumming that bounces off the walls and floor. SO, I'm going to have to wait for another show to give my verdict on the quality of Las Robertas. And, I'm going to stick with the chill lounge nights for visiting El Steinvorth.

Bringing Peace to Downtown Chaos via Geometric Abstract Art - San Jose, Costa Rica

One of Costa Rica's most famous artists, Manuel de la Cruz focused his work on geometric abstraction. At the core of this artform was using mathematical calculations as the foundation to create the shapes painted. Cruz's idea was that through use of the golden mean, and an instinctual use of color one could be brought closer to the cosmos, divinty and overall peace by creating visual balance. The Bank Museums have a current exhibition of his work on the bottom floor. This exhibit is very worthwhile as it shows you a window into not just the artform, but the artistic movements in Costa Rica, and English signage is available.

Additionally, the city recently installed about 12 recreations of his work along Paseo de los Damas. While I found them strange at first, I can now understand that through those pieces, one might find calm and balance amongst the chaos of downtown San Jose. So thanks to the city for investing in these pieces, and no thanks to the graffiti taggers that have already marked all over them.

Women in Music, Las Robertas, Nancy Buchan & Facebook - San Jose, Costa Rica

So I'm a big music freak, and have recently been looking for some female musician role models here in Costa Rica. I love when you send an intention to the universe and it gives you information.

Las Robertas: First, I am very excited to finally see Las Robertas play at one of my favorite downtown lounges, El Steinvorth. I have heard great reviews about these female garage punk rockers. I'll post a full review tomorrow. This show is TONIGHT, at 8 p.m. I am sure there will be a cover but can't find a price. Nice surprise if there isn't! Nancy Buchan: I also took a quick trip to the beach, and had the great luck of getting to see fiddle player, Nancy Buchan twice, once in Dominical where she has regular gigs at the Rum Bar, and in Jaco. We had a BRIEF chat about being a female musician while she was perfecting her craft, and it was good inspiration to persevere. We are lucky to have her talent in Costa Rica. She even gives lessons in San Isidro. She is in several bands here in Costa Rica and it appears she guest plays in a number of others. If you see her name on the agenda for a show here in San Jose a) make sure I know b) make sure you go.

Female Musicians Facebook, Costa Rica: Lastly, there is a new facebook group specifically for female musicians in Costa Rica. The group says the will be sharing news and holding meetings and events. More to come!

Monumental Inauguration in La Sabana - San Jose, Costa Rica

This Saturday, visitors and expats in San Jose, Costa Rica can participate in the inauguration of Costa Rica's first female president.

Events will take place on the mid-northern side of the park. The swearing in will begin at 10:00 a.m., with more formal events following throughout the afternoon. Then at 7 p.m. the real fun begins with a free Concert for Democracy. International artists such as Perrozompompo will perform, as well as Costa Rican greats including Grupo Mal Pais.

Being in San Jose, is like being in Washington D.C., important political events are at your doorstep so head down and be a part of this special moment!

P.S. security will be very intense in the morning, you might not be able to get very close to main stage.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change - Off Broadway's longest running musical is being performed by LTG here in Costa Rica. I laughed so hard my face really hurt when I saw it last weekend. It's about relationships--something we all, well, 'relate' to. It's my top recommendation of the weekend. Fri., Sat. at 7:30, Sun. at 2:30. 4,500 c, 2,000c for students.

United for Hope Piano Concert - One of Costa Rica's beloved young pianists, Pablo Esquivel, is one of 11 playing a benefit concert at the North American/Costa Rican Cultural Center, Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. This concert will benefit the younger sibling of Esquivel's friend who is in dire need of a life-saving heart surgery in the U.S. Also playing is Cynthia Soto who was this week's mediodia performer at Teatro Nacional.

Cost is 10,000 c.

Blues Devils - Costa Rica's best blues band will be playing in La Sabana at Mac's American Bar, Saturday, at 9:00 p.m. These guys not only play great blues, but are fun to watch. They can even sprinkle in some AC/DC (who as a complete side note are doing the entire soundtrack for Iron Man II also opening this weekend). This is a free show and a great chance to let loose, do some dancing, and definitely some drinking.

Barrio Amon in San Jose, Costa Rica is boasting 2 new restaurants, growing international cuisine options for visitors & locals alike.

Arte y Gusto Cafe opened a few months ago and is definitely among the top 5 in the city for ambiance. Old pieces of driftwood, a fountain, soft lighting and purple hues gives this downtown gem an 'earthy, deserted night on the beach with a lover sharing a bottle of wine' feel.

The owners bring their culinary skills from southern france, creating a menu with french influenced preparations of meat, fish, soups and salads. A nice variety of imported wines and beers are available. My personal recommendation is to try this place for lunch. They offer a 3,300 c executive plate that typically includes a starter, main dish with a side, a dessert and a fresh juice. Because the food is so good I consider this the best lunch deal in town, and a downright steal! Cash only. 12 - 10 M - F, 6 - 10 Sat. closed Sun.

Pachamama has moved directly west of the Holiday Inn and offers some classic Argentine dishes. The atmosphere is quaint and they've done their best to work with glaring white walls. The owner is very sweet however. I have yet to eat at this location but I am stoked about the milonesa and hope their empanadas are authentic to Argentina and not the overly greasy, overly doughy, lacking meat empanadas that abound in Costa Rica. Prices are between 1,000 - 5,000 c. Accept credit cards and have wi-fi.

I will disclose at the beginning of this post that I am a member of The Little Theater Group of Costa Rica. And, I will provide posts on new shows and activities the group presents. This group is a great way to meet others living in Costa Rica that share the love of theater. It's only 5,000 c/year to join and you can volunteer for acting, directing, stage management, production, costumes and more.

The group is also very involved with community projects, such as helping to rebuild a school affected by the Jan. 2009 Poas earthquake.

I highly recommend seeing the latest show put together by the group, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change". I had the good fortune to work with 3 of the 4 cast members in the last show, "No Sex Please, We're British" and can personally vouch for the high caliber of talent. Not to mention this is a show about the modern day dating game, so we can all relate to that.

I was laughing non-stop at the preview performance and can't wait to see the show tonight. Tickets are 4,500 c, 2,000 student, 7:30 p.m. tonight and 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. Final San Jose shows run next weekend.

4/21 Art City Tour Review in San Jose, Costa Rica

Last night's Art City Tour was a great success. There were over 20 galleries with a variety of visual, performing and mixed media works on display. We were able to visit 6 different spaces. Special thanks to Des Pacio for delicious sangria!

If you have yet to do an Art City Tour I highly recommend it. It's a lovely way to see some of the national museums for free, meet fellow art fans, and see the sophisticated side of downtown San Jose. We finished this tour at the afterparty at El Steinvorth.

Earth Day: For those of you who don't know. Mining in Las Crucitas, Costa Rica is about to begin. A protest event, nicely timed with Earth Day, will take place all day today. Concerts, speakers, and nature lovers will surely pack the day's agenda. This is happening in front of the Superior Courts. If you've been wanting to get more involved with environmental groups, today is probably a good day to start.

Over 20 Art Spaces Open for Free Tonight - San Jose,Costa Rica

The second Art City Tour of 2010 is already here and is about double the size of the first one. Today, the 21st, starting at 6:00 p.m. you can visit over 20 galleries in the downtown area for free. Buses start out of MADC. My recommendation is to start at one of the gallery clusters away from MADC as the wait for a bus was about 45 minutes last time. You must prioritize because the event only lasts until 8:30 p.m., way too short to get to even half of the galleries.

I think the most interesting exhibitions will be found at Kalu, Fundacion teor/etica, and Casa de Cultura J Figueres.

Delicious Asian Food in Downtown San Jose, Costa Rica

The eastern side of downtown offers two exceptional and varied restaurants to satisfy your 'antojos', cravings, for Asian food.

The newest of the two is Wok & Noodles. It's a cozy and peaceful space tucked away in Barrio La California, next to Area City. And while the space is small, it's packed with a number of things that make it lovely. The menu offers a variety of asian fusion plates including soups, salads, dim sum, rice, noodles and more.

I've taken 5 different guests here and each plate has been excellent. I've enjoyed everything off of the Dim Sum menu. Additionally, the owners are planning to open a tea bar in the upstairs space, and the walls are open to artists interested in displaying their works--just contact the owner Roberto for details.

This restaurant accepts credit cards and has wi-fi access. Menu items range from 1,300 c - 5,000 c. 2233.6212

San Jose's classic and famous amongst locals Chinese restaurant, Wong's, is a must for travelers in need of a break from casados. Across from the National Museum, they serve up fresh, flavorful plates late into the night. I have had about 15 different menu items and each melts in my mouth everytime. I cannot dine here though, without having the carne empanadas. I wake up some mornings craving them.

Most plates are 3,000 -5,000 c, but can easily be enough to share. Credit Cards accepted.

String Quartets and Flutes This Week - San Jose, Costa Rica

Flutes take over this week in San Jose, while the Alma string quartet finishes things off on Sun.

The 6th International Festival of Flutists starts today at 5 p.m. Flutists from 7 different countries will be performing Tues., Thurs., and Fri. at 5 p.m. in the foyer of the National Theater. These shows are 1,000 c. a nice price to see a show in Costa Rica's most beloved theater. Get your ticket early. You will not be let in after the show starts.

On Sunday you can enjoy free string quartet performances from ALMA. Their pieces will include Pavana, by Benjamín Gutiérrez, one of Costa Rica's most famous composers. This show starts at 5:30 p.m. in the gardens of the Children's Museum. I recommend arriving by car as the surrounding neighborhood is rough and will be abandoned on a Sunday evening.

Orchid Expo Review

This was a nice way to bring color to a rainy, grey afternoon in San Jose.

The expo itself was packed with different orchid varieties, sure to please an avid orchid fan. For an a average observer like myself, it was nice to see the more unique flowers, some pictured below.

My favorite part was shopping for my first orchid plant. The shopping section is free if you don't want to pay for the whole expo. I am pictured below with my new encyclia cordigera. Wish me luck in keeping it alive!

This expo is also a great chance to check out the new Old Aduana. Open until 7 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. tomorrow. Price 2,000 c.

Festivals: Video, Orchids, Queens & Guitars --San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose is Queen (seriously, there is queen's fun included) of festivals this time of year. These festivals are either free or relatively low cost and fun for families, dates, or relaxing after fun at the beach. Enjoy!

Festival de Video Joven La 240. This free festival began on Sunday and runs all week showing video shorts by central american youth in the open-air theater at CENAC (old Fanal). 60 works will be shown today thru Fri. at 7 p.m. and the festival will end Saturday with an awards ceremony at El Lobo Estepario, which is a bar themed after a movie theater and one of my downtown favorites.

National Orchid Expo. Love orchids and great urban architecture? Visit the National Orchid Expo this weekend inside the newly opened, Old Aduana this 16th - 18th. Hours are Fri. and Sat. 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., Sun. 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission is 2,000 c general and 1,000 c old folks and kids--celebrate those discounts!

The Queen's Rock 'n' Roll Birthday Party. While not downtown, we can't pass up a rock n roll party for the Queen of England (and several other places) at the British Ambassador's residence, just north of Plaza Los Laureles in Escazu. All sorts of British food and drinks will be served as well as raffles for air travel and resort stays. Prizes for best costume. Sat. April 17, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Proceeds to benefit local schools in need. 2,500 c is general admission at the gate, under 12 1,000 c. Looking forward to rocking purple nail polish at this one.

Videos and Horses are Today's Events in San Jose, Costa Rica

This morning you can catch the International Horse Parade. It begins in La Sabana at 11 a.m., and makes its way to Parque La Merced. My recommendation is to stand somewhere near the end and at some point make a stop into La Iglesia Merced. It was recently remodeled, of neogothical style and very unique to architecture in downtown San Jose.

This evening at 7 p.m. you can take a look at what young central american videographers are up to at the Festival de Video Joven La 240. This festival will run all week and show the video works in the open-air theater at CENAC (old Fanal). 60 works will be shown today thru Fri. and the festival will end with an awards ceremony at El Lobo Estepario, which is a bar themed after a movie theater and one of my downtown favorites.

April 8, Art Openings -- Great Energy in San Jose

International and Costa Rican artists were out in full force last night amongst several exhibit openings. Barrio Bird first took a look at Efraín Méndez's (Costa Rica) 'Quimera' at the French Alliance. Consisting of 8 acyrlic pieces, Mendez explores fantasy, best displayed through children's games. View until the 22nd of April.

Second stop was to see Ralph Jarvis's (Canadian) work on display at the Sophia Wanamaker Gallery in the Costa Rica-North American Cultural Center. Jarvis's work feature a technique new to me and many others, and is any man's dream---Blow torching. Jarvis focused on nature found between Newfoundland and Costa Rica, with some Peruvian materials throughout. On display until May 3.

Our final gallery stop was to the Jacob Karpio Gallery. The space is large and full of work from John Juric(Costa Rica) who appears to work with several media and focuses on paint, installations and murals. I really get a creepy vibe from Mr. Karpio, but he put together a great party, with great pieces from this artist. The music was outstanding and I'll be looking to see this artist's work, and the band again. And maybe overtime I'll get to know Mr. Karpio's uncreepy side.

April is the Month of Free Local & Foreign Films in Downtown San Jose

The weather is wonderful, arts are plentiful and free movies are here to enjoy. This month you have several opportunities to enjoy the best of both Costa Rican filmmakers and foreign films.

Every Tues. this month you can view 'Movies on the Stairs' outside at the Bank Museums located at Plaza de la Cultura. Showings are compilations of 8 Costa Rican shorts, different each week and total run time is about 1 hour. This event is free.

Following the free, one-day a week in April theme, the French Alliance is showing French films on Fridays. Left to catch are 'All the Mornings of the World' April 16, 'My Life in Pink' April 23, and Seraphine April 30.

And last but not least, all Costa Rican movie theaters, Cinemark, Cinépolis y CCM, will begin showing this Fri. April 9 a new film by Costa Rican director, Hilda Hidalgo. The film is a story paying homeage to Gabriel García Márquez, famous Columbian author. Normal movie ticket prices apply.

Historic Architecture Renovations; La Aduana & More- San Jose, Costa Rica

The new Aduana, which has had many roles including customs, and minting money, is officially open today to the public as a new 8,800 sq. meter public art space, with almost the same in private use space. Parts of the building have been restored while others have been added with new construction.

This new facility encompasses, Teatro de La Aduana--home to the national theater company, Casa del Cuño--a new space for cyber arts (tech&art) and possibly a cafe/restaurant on the 2nd floor, and the hall space which can be used for private or public functions, fairs, concerts, etc. Call to obtain events schedule as website has no useful calendar, Teléfono (506) 221 2154.

In addition, the abandoned building across the street from the famous site of murder of Costa Rica's Chief of Army, Jose Joaquin Tinoco (his execution was the beginning of the end for dictatorships in CR), is under renovation. Beautiful, Empty San Jose, Costa Rica

Now while I love San Jose and its irratic madness, it's just as enjoyable empty. This is the Holy Week so of course the best place for Ticos to think seriously about their faith is THE BEACH! This leaves San Jose with only tourists, thieves and police.

Fortunately there were plenty of police out today so I felt comfortable walking around. Otherwise.....it would have been a 'carry everything in my bra' day. Here are some photos of empty San Jose.

Titanick, FIA

I saw Titanick last night and if you can see them tonight at 6 p.m. in Parque Central you will not be disappointed. The group focuses on street performance using fire, air and water as a part of the performance. The group likes to perform outside because each setting is different, they can take advantage of effects that are restricted inside, and people that may never go to the theater get exposure. It was a thrill to happen upon this last night. Enjoy!

Contemporary Museum of Art & Design, Flamenco Opening - San Jose, Costa Rica

Barrio Bird checked out MADC's opening for, in_ter_va_lo. It was well done with live music, free wine and plenty of San Jose's 'artists'.

The exhibition takes a look at artists who have turned to Flamenco as the center of their work. Most of this exhibition is video so allow yourself more time than usual to walk through if you want to take in each piece.

These pics are a few of the pieces and a lovely moon over San Jose. Open through April 30th. P.S. This facility is air-conditioned so nice stop in midday, free on Mondays.

New Cozy, Cute Restaurants - San Jose, Costa Rica

Two smaller cafes have opened in the past week. Maple Leaf Cafe is in the previous Nashville Bar. It is two stories with a nice balcony and beautiful views of Parque Morazan, downtown and the northern mountains. Breakfast is served all day. Typical Tico/gringo mix on the menu. Prices are a little high, normal for the area. Open 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. 2221-6127

Pizza OK Ristorante Italiano is a cute cafe about 50 meters north of AutoMercado. They sell inside and have a window at the street. I've been disappointed in pizza selection here in Costa Rica and this seems like welcome change. Incorporating more gourment ingredients such as gorgonzola cheese, capers, ricotta and anchovies. I had the Pizza OK, tomato, pesto, ricotta & spinach, Yum! 2222-3837

Let's just say, WOW. San Jose can really put a nice festival together when it wants to. It was so nice to see so many people in downtown on the weekend. I hope we will see more activities like this continue to bring life to downtown.

This year's TransitArte festival really offered a great variety of arts for all ages to enjoy. We here at Barrio Bird were only able to catch a few events, but we saw everyone enjoying themselves. ! Opening night is finally here!

In addition to running tours, I've also reconnected with the stage. I am playing Frances in 'No sex please, we're British'. It has been rewarding to work with a team and be accountable to a project bigger than any one of us.

It's a special opportunity to participate in English-speaking theater in Costa Rica of all places. There truly is a thriving arts community here, both local and expat. Art City Tour in San Jose Costa Rica

The first art gallery tour of 2010 happened last night. It was pretty good but 2 hours was not enough time to visit all of the places.

This photo is from the Museo de Arte y Diseno Contemporaneo. The exhibit was Migracion al Sur. The pieces dealt with emotion, ideas, and concepts that pass when we relocate ourselves.

I was also able to visit the National Museum and Jacob Karpio Gallery for the first time. They were both nice enough, but I don't think I need to return to the national museum. You can check out all photos from the night on our Facebook page.

Moving forward in San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose, Costa Rica is exciting to me. Right now in 2010 there are a number of things happening to enrich the culture and pleasantness of the city.

Barrio Escalante Urban Plan
More fine dining restaurants/bars such as: Bar Morazan, El Steinvorth, Arte y Gusto Cafe, Kalu, and Wok and Noodles
Possible new regulations on noise pollution (have seen them testing decible levels, haven't read any news about what will be done with the data)

In addition, galleries are coming together on a more regular basis to bring access to the arts for free or little charge. An example of this is this Wednesday's Art City Tour.

This is just the beginning of what I believe will be a great urban revitalization over the next two years. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter for regular news and event updates.

Why tour San Jose

San Jose, Costa Rica is a special place where one can surf the internet on a cell phone while simultaneously buy eggs from a man pushing a cart in the street. It's a meeting of old and new, east and west, north and south. This makes for lots of interesting discoveries as you explore the city.

Tourists may read it is best to get in and out of this city as quickly as possible to enjoy all the nature Costa Rica has to offer. I however argue that one solid day should be passed here. There is a lot to learn that will provide greater context to Costa Rica's culture, food, transportation and relationships to the rest of the world. And the more you know about a place, the richer your journey.

One reason I started this business is to give tourists a chance to relax in San Jose, Costa Rica. There are some tough spots you need to know about in order to get around without hassle.

So, taking one of our tours allows you to be more secure and not stop at every corner to look at your map and figure out where you are (there are no addresses in Costa Rica so I promise you will have to pull out a map if you walk alone), or worse yet, end up somewhere you shouldn't be.

Hello there, I am Stacey and this is the blog for my company Barrio Bird Walking Tours. We do $10 walking tours of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Over the years, San Jose has earned a bad reputation for tourists. I live in the city, and know that while some parts are rough around the edges, there are many beautiful sites to see.

So, I designed these walking tours to provide the tourists that have to pass through San Jose a chance to see its secret gems. We do a generic culture/history/art/architecture tour. We also do a bar tour. In addition, we can build a custom tour for you.
